Styling Your Family | Tampa Family Photographer

styling your family photo session in Annapolis MD by Melanie Amparo

Part of the client experience when hiring me is styling! It’s such an important factor when it comes to creating beautiful photos! As we start the rush of Fall Family Photos I thought it might be fun to share a few of my favorite styling tips.

Coordinate But Don’t Match

Find a color palette you love and choose outfits that complement each other without looking too matchy-matchy. I recommend picking one color you love and then heading over to Pinterest and searching color pallets. For example, search “mustard color pallet” and you’ll get some excellent ideas of what colors blend well together. I recommend choosing about 3 different colors. Opt for neutrals with a few pops of color. Avoid mixing prints. If one person has a print, then pull in other colors from the print for the rest of your family.

Muted Colors

Muted, earthy colors photograph beautifully. They not only compliment my editing style but they blend well with my recommended shooting locations. The bright, neon colors can dramatically change the overall tone of the image.

Fabrics

Choosing the “right” fabrics for your session is important. Choosing fabrics that show movement in photographs can make a major difference. I absolutely love long, flowy dresses that catch the wind behind you. Avoid tight, short dresses as it not only makes it more difficult to pose but bra and underwear lines are a struggle as well.

Sizing

Sizing is also such an important factor. You want clothing that is flattering and not too bulky. For children, we tend to buy clothes a little bigger to have room to grow into. I’d avoid that for your session. Fitted clothing looks much cleaner and provides a better end result.

Dress for your location

Dressing for your location is also something that should be considered. If you choose a wooded location, wearing olives would blend right in. Choose colors that would pop- such as mustard, rust and neutrals. For beach sessions, think about colors that would compliment the beautiful sunset.

To make things a little easier for my clients, I linked up with Style and Select, which is an outfit coordination system, to help my clients find photo-worthy outfits from the comfort of their own couch.
